Charity Campaign: Loneliness - there are thousands of us

One in a series of illustrations for Arts & Health South West as part of their campaign to tackle loneliness.

Inspiration:

“There are thousands of us” - One thing about depicting loneliness - I think - is that there’s often a tendency to show people as somewhat blank, grey and depressed, whereas my experience of loneliness is more that you have an overflowing need to connect with others; you want so much to reach out and talk to someone, and you’re desperate for contact and for intimacy, so much so that you’re worried others will see your ‘neediness’ spilling out of you. So, it’s not that your desire or your feelings go away - perhaps it’s quite the opposite, and they become so big that it’s hard to bear.
